Session 3 Blog Post: eLearning Trends in Higher Education

Changing long-held beliefs, cultural practices, and traditional ways of thinking is never easy. These perspectives are often deeply rooted in how we were raised and educated. However, the world today is evolving rapidly, and education must evolve alongside it. One of the most significant shifts we are witnessing is in the area of eLearning, where the focus is moving toward more experiential, “learn-by-doing” approaches. This shift challenges us to think differently, dream bigger, and embrace change as it happens in real time.

In both the present and the future, education is no longer simply about acquiring knowledge. Instead, it is about continuously developing and adapting skills for lifelong learning. Learners are being prepared not just for a single job, but for multiple roles, many of which may not yet exist. As technology continues to advance, the educational landscape is transforming in remarkable ways, opening up new possibilities for how, where, and why we learn.

One key trend shaping the future of education is the development of immersive virtual learning environments. In these spaces, students can interact with tutors and peers from around the world as if they were physically present in the same classroom. Looking ahead to 2030 or 2035, learners are likely to experience highly interactive and engaging environments that make learning both meaningful and motivating.

My own experience reflects this shift. For example, when I first engaged in tweeting for my Community of Practice (CoP) task, I was unaware of tools like Twitter Post Analytics. Through hands-on experience, I discovered how each post could be analyzed in terms of impressions, engagement, and interactions. This insight motivated me to improve my contributions and aim for higher engagement, demonstrating how experiential learning can deepen understanding and encourage growth.

Technology has already revolutionized how we access information and engage with learning. The rise of the internet and mobile devices has made education more accessible and convenient than ever before. Online platforms and digital resources allow students to access learning materials at any time, while tools such as simulations and gamified activities create more interactive and engaging experiences. However, it is important to maintain a balance, as excessive screen time may negatively affect students’ health and well-being.

Reflecting on my experience in the ED403 course, I have learned that actively engaging with technology is essential for building confidence, knowledge, and practical skills. Exploring tools such as ChatGPT has been both enjoyable and educational. For instance, I experimented with editing my own photo to visualize myself at 21 years of age, and I also worked with images of my Aristotle group members to create scenarios such as presenting in a classroom and sharing a meal together. These activities, while playful, have helped me become more comfortable with digital tools and encouraged me to embrace the ongoing changes of the 21st-century digital world.

Overall, eLearning is not just a trend but a transformative force in higher education. By embracing new technologies and learning approaches, we can better prepare ourselves and our students for an ever-changing future.
